Over 25 years, Tobias Frere-Jones has established himself as one of the world’s leading typeface designers, creating some of the most widely used typefaces, including Interstate, Poynter Oldstyle, Whitney, Gotham, Surveyor, Tungsten and Retina.
Tobias received a BFA in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1992. He joined the faculty of the Yale University School of Art in 1996 and has lectured throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. His work is in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2006, The Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague (KABK) awarded him the Gerrit Noordzij Prijs, for his contributions to typographic design, writing and education. In 2013 he received the AIGA Medal, in recognition of exceptional achievements in the field of design.
Lover of all things related to design, Claudia left her home in the south of Brazil at age 18 to study design at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
After graduation, she worked for nearly 10 years as an award-winning designer and art director at titles including T:, the New York Times style magazine; The New York Times magazine;Blender; More; New York; Domino special editions; Gourmet special editions; and Men's Health. In 2013, she headed west to serve as design director at Wired.
Inspired by her instructors at SVA, Claudia went on to teach there; and she continues to educate designers-in-training through type classes at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. She is also the education co-chair for the San Francisco chapter of AIGA.
In 2014, Claudia launched o Banquinho with the redesign of Real Simple magazine. Now she spends her time working on projects she loves; jetting between San Francisco, New York City, Seattle and anywhere great projects take her.
Steven Heller is an author, art director, educator and blogger. For 33 years he was a senior art director at the New York Times, originally at the OpEd page and then the New York Times Book Review. He is the co-chair and co-founder (with Lita Talarico) of the SVA NYC MFA Design / Designer as Author + Entrepreneur program. He co-founded the SVA MFA Products of Design, MFA Interaction and MPS Branding programs. He was the co-director of SVA's Modernism & Eclecticism: A History of Graphic Design symposiums. The author or editor of over 175 books, including Design Literacy, Graphic Design Rants and Raves, Graphic Style, 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design, Typology and the Typography Sketchbooks.
He is the recipient of the 2011 Smithsonian National Design Award for "Design Mind," the 1999 AIGA Medal for Lifetime Achievement, the 2016 Eric Carle Award, The Society of Illustrator's Art Direction award, The Art Directors Hall of Fame Educators Award, the Pratt Institute Hershel Levit Award and two honorary Ph.Ds from College of Creative Studies in Detroit and the University of West Bohemia in the Czech Republic. He has appeared in over 20 documentaries on design and political art and has written over 100 introductions and forewords for books on design and illustration.
Richard Kegler is the lead designer and founder of P22 type foundry. Mr. Kegler's background in typography and book arts includes ventures in bookbinding and letterpress printing. However, the historical context and background of type continue to be his greatest interest and shape the evolution of P22.
Richard is currently the director at Wells Book Arts Center in Aurora, NY and a trustee for the American Printing History Association (APHA). He is former chairman of the board for the Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA). He has a masters degree in Media Study and produced the Making Faces film as a culmination of his interests and experience.
